New 11-story Arts District office building will cantilever over A+D Museum

An Arts District cultural institution will be incorporated into a new creative office project in a very cool way.

An 11-story creative office campus will hover dramatically over the A+D Museum, which sits in a low-rise brick building at Fourth and Colyton streets. The Glendale-based developer, Legendary Developments, LLC, has also extended the museum’s lease.

The designs, presented Thursday to the neighborhood’s urban design and land use committee, show that the project at Fourth and Hewitt will also put a courtyard in front of the museum on Colyton. That space could be used for events for the new building but would also function as a public plaza.

The A+D Museum moved to the Arts District in early 2015, and had announced plans around that time to eventually move to a permanent home in Downtown with the American Institute of Architects' Los Angeles chapter (AIA/LA) and the much-anticipated Center for Architecture and Urban Design Los Angeles (CALA).

The creative office building, designed by Gensler, will bring 255,000 square feet of office space, about 15,000 square feet of ground-floor retail, and over 11,500 square feet of open space. The project will also have parking for 538 cars, and will offer parking for museum attendees.
